It is a texting, IM-ing, pinging world out there, and our kids are all over it! Not only are they so much better at learning the ropes than their ancient parents, they are sophisticated — even devious — at figuring out ways to sneak in game playing time when we have clearly stated that all devices must be turned OFF!
Our solution is: If you can’t beat ‘em, encourage them!” There are a lot of computer games and apps that are fun to play and help teach our kids about serious issues effecting our world. Our friends at Games for Change are on top of all these latest “social games” that are worth checking out. Here are some computer and mobile games to consider:
SPENT: This game asks players to make spending decisions to learn how much it costs to live a secure life and how sometimes homelessness is just one decision away.
Raise the Village: A farm raising game that assists real villages in Uganda. By purchasing virtual items that assist villagers in the game, a real-world equivalent gets sent to the villagers in the Ugandan village the game is modeled after.
Karma Tycoon: Players learn about the nonprofit world as they apply for grants, receive donations, and manage their budgets in order to solve community problems.
Silverbackers: Players face the challenges that come with gorilla conservation by starting off as an infant gorilla lost in the jungles of Central Africa and seeing what happens as the gorilla ages.
It goes without saying that it is important to check out the game before giving the green light to play. Some games are better suited for older kids. Some are free to download while others have a small price tag. And, some give you the ability to make real-life financial contributions as part of the game play. So let your kids click away (within reason)! There are games out there that are good for learning and good for the world around us!
